What is a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)?

SHAC is an advisory committee made up of parents, community leaders, local health-care professionals, educators, and students. The SHAC acts collectively to address the specific components of the District’s school health program, for the purpose of making recommendations to the Board of Trustees. The SHAC makes recommendations that will positively impact student health and learning, while assuring community values are reflected in school health programming.
 

Academic achievement is an excellent indicator for the overall well-being of youth, and a primary predictor and determinant of adult health outcomes. Individuals with more education are likely to live longer, experience better health outcomes, and practice health-promoting behaviors such as exercising regularly, refraining from smoking, and obtaining timely health care check-ups and screenings. Because there is a close relationship with between health and education, there is a need to foster health and well-being within the education environment for all students.
